Penn State Women’s Tennis kicks off the fall season at the Charlotte Invitational

CHARLOTTE, NC – The Penn State women’s tennis team kicked off their fall season with the first day of the tournament at the Charlotte Invitational. The first day of play consisted of two rounds of doubles and one round of singles.


Olivia Dorner lost her match to ETSU’s Emilia Alfaro, 7-5, 6-0.

Carla Girbau fought hard in her match against ETSU’s Daniela Rivera. However, Girbau ended up losing by a score of 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2.

Ioana Gheorghita dropped to Iowa’s Vipasha Mehra, 6-4, 6-4.

Karly Friedland lost his match to ETSU’s Yunuen Elizarraras, 0-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-4.


Karly Friedland and Ioana Gheorghita had a successful doubles day. The pair defeated ETSU’s Ralitsa Alexandrova and Daniela Rivera 6-0. Friedland and Gheorghita also got a 6-4 victory over ETSU’s Emilia Alfaro and Mariya Shumeika.

Olivia Dorner and Carla Girbau faced two defeats together. The pair were defeated by ETSU’s Emilia Alfaro and Mariya Shumeika, 6-3, and ETSU’s Vipasha Mehra and Pia Kranholdt, 6-1.

The Nittany Lions will continue to play in the Charlotte Invitational on Saturday, September 23.
