NDSU Soccer crashes at Summit League opening in Denver

DENVER, Colorado — The North Dakota State women’s soccer team opened the Summit League game with a 2-0 loss away from home in Denver on Friday night.

The Pioneers took the lead in the 31stroad minute, when the hosts capitalized on the game’s first corner for either of the teas. Jordan Crockett sent a corner to Hannah Gallegos, who headed the ball to the back post, where it hit the post and went off a Bison quarterback.

Two minutes later, Denver doubled their lead when Delaney McGowan’s cross was deflected in a failed attempt to Abby Wilkinson and the ball went into the goal.

In the second half, Bison had the best chances, as Olivia Watson forced a diving save from Nerea Arrazola in the 52na minute.

A few minutes later, Bison would have another goal opportunity disallowed from the back line in a corner kick. Jess Hanley sent a ball to the 6-yard area which was headed by Paige Goaley and appeared to leap across the goal line before being eliminated by a Pioneer defender.

Bison would have several more kicks in the second half, including a Payton Jo Armijo in 87º minute that forced another save, but Bison couldn’t find a breakthrough.

Denver led the game in official shooting 10-5. Wilkinson finished with two saves in the game defensively for Bison.

The state of North Dakota will now make the trip to Nebraska and return to action on Sunday against Omaha. Kick off is scheduled for 1pm in Omaha against the Mavericks.
