Yamashita, 21, who topped this year’s awards list, built a five-stroke lead over Fumika Kawagishi after racking up 12 bogey-free birdies at Rifu Golf Club in Rifu, Miyagi Prefecture.

She had six birdies on each of nine front and rear.

The previous record, from 11 to 61 years old, had been set by South Korean Kim Hyo Joo in 2012 and equaled by Mone Inami in 2021.

Yamashita has won twice this year and three times in his touring career. One of her wins in 2022 came in a major tournament, the Copa Salonpas of the Women’s World Championship, in May.
