John Abis nailed it to lead the University of Perpetual Help System DALTA to a close 79-77 victory over Mapua University, winning again in the 98th NCAA Season on Friday.

Abis hit a massive three-pointer over Paolo Hernandez’s defense, giving Perpetual a much-needed 79-77 lead with 26.1 seconds left in the game.

Mapua had the opportunity to equalize – or even regain the lead – but the Cardinals committed an expensive violation of the clock, returning the ball to Altas with 1.8 seconds left.

Perpetual, who have lost two of their last three games, improved to 2-2, while last season’s finalist Mapua continued their slump with a 1-3 card.

With the two teams trading runs in the first half, it was Mapua who took the advantage late in the second quarter as the Cardinals led Altas 41-38.

But Perpetual retaliated in the third, responding with a 10-0 run led by veteran Kim Aurin and rookie Jun Roque as they got back into the driver’s seat, 54-50.

Two Abis charities gave Perpetual its biggest lead, 60-52, before Hernandez reduced that lead to just five after firing a massive triple to end the quarter.

Mapua closed the gap to two, but Aurin led another crucial 9-2 run for a 73-64 spread, followed by a 13-3 run from Mapua, with the Intramuros team regaining the lead, 77-76, after a basket by Warren Bonifacio missing 1:09.

During that period, the rarely used Jopet Soriano poured all his 11 points to light up the Mapua bench, but his comeback fell short as Perpetual crossed for the win.
