Furious Comeback leads women’s football over George Washington, 2-1

PHILADELPHIA – Second year Haley Gschrey capped a thrilling comeback for the La Salle women’s soccer team, scoring the winning goal in the 83rd minute as the Explorers found the back of the net twice in the final 13 minutes to defeat George Washington 2-1.

The win knocked GW (3-1-5) from the undefeated ranks and improved La Salle to 6-4-0 overall and 1-2 in the Atlantic 10 game.

  • Neither team managed to go very offensively in the first half, with both teams combining for nine shots and two corner kicks.
  • The second half began with the Colonials scoring less than a minute into the period, with Cammie Dopke converting to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
  • The pace picked up and both teams opened up a few chances throughout the final 45 minutes.
  • Kelly Poole had a chance in the 72nd minute to give GW a two-goal lead, but Michela Auguadro made a stop to keep the margin at one.
  • A fortuitous deflection led to the equalizer, when Gschrey threw a ball into the middle of the area in the 78th minute. A GW defender redirected the ball to the bottom right corner of the goal to tie the score at 1-1.
  • Less than five minutes later, Gschrey was at the center of the endorsement count as he was in the perfect position to convert a deep throw from the second-year quarterback. Lauren Costello.
  • From there, the Explorers maintained possession for much of the final seven minutes thanks in large part to the rookie Ricshya Walker and his work in the offensive third.

  • GW had a 16-13 lead on shots, including a 10-7 margin on shots on goal.
  • Auguadro ended up with nine saves for the Explorers, while his counterpart Grace Crowe had six for the Colonials.
  • Kelli McGroarty had a time-high four shots, including one right after the tie that was defended by Crowe at close range.
  • Senior Emily Banashefski had three shots, all on goal, and had the first opportunity of the game that was deflected by Crowe.

  • The Explorers return to the road to face VCU (3-1-7) on Sunday, September 25th. The kick-off is scheduled for 14:00.
