England manager Southgate supports Maguire despite Manchester United’s woes | The Mighty 790 KFGO

(Reuters) – England manager Gareth Southgate has said he is willing to put his reputation on the line to support Harry Maguire but that the centre-back’s place in the squad will be complicated if he continues to miss out on club-level games. .

Maguire, who helped England reach the Euro Cup final last year, has not started in Manchester United’s last four Premier League games. United have won four straight in the league since Maguire’s last start – a 4-0 defeat at Brentford.

“Clearly not an ideal situation (with Maguire). We’re just a few weeks into pre-season so physically if they have a couple of 90 minutes that’s fine,” Southgate told reporters ahead of England’s Nations League game against Italy.

“Another seven to eight weeks, it starts to get more complicated. But he is an important player for us and it is important to support our best players. Whatever reputation I have, I’m putting it there.”

England are on the brink of relegation to League B after picking up two points from their first four games, including two surprising defeats to Hungary.

They play Italy in Milan on Friday and welcome Germany to Wembley on 26 September as they continue their preparations for the World Cup in Qatar.
