SOUTH BEND, Ind. — The #18ºRanked women’s soccer team Notre Dame gave the Virginia Cavaliers their first loss of the 2022 season on Thursday at home, winning 1-0.
The win marked Notre Dame’s first against an opponent in the top two since 2015, and takes the Irish to 8-1-0 for the year.
Despite their highly praised offense, the Cavaliers struggled against the Irish defensive line, generating just one shot on goal for Notre Dame’s eight.
The only score of the match came from a corner by Korbin Albert at the end of the 76º minute. The ball bounced from player to player before midfielder Maddie Mercado pushed the ball into the back of the net.
With six goals this season, Mercado has already set a career scoring record with eight games remaining in the regular season. The score was also Mercado’s third winning goal of the season, the team’s best.
Notre Dame Women’s Soccer will end their match against Pitt on Sunday at 1:00 pm ET.
