Women’s football secures 3-0 SVU victory

BUENA VISTA, Virginia — The Washington and Lee women’s soccer team claimed their fourth straight win with a 3-0 decision at Southern Virginia University in a nonconference game Wednesday night.

The generals (5-0-2) scored the first goal of the game just under four minutes into the game. A penalty by the Knights (4-3) created a free kick outside the area for Blue and White. The ball crossed in front of the net and got out of control until the junior defender Louisa Bynum (Charlotte, North Carolina / Providence Day School) caught the loose ball from a set of blue and gray jerseys and landed his shot at the back of the net from the six-yard area.

Washington and Lee continued to spice up shots throughout the first half with eight, four of which were on target, and the generals owned all three corners awarded in the first half against their city rivals.

In the second half, after a W&L throw-in from the right, the senior midfielder Grace Wielechowski (Charlotte, NC/Charlotte Catholic) controlled the ball from outside the 18-yard area. She gave a pass to the first year midfielder Helen Otteni (Arlington, Virginia / The Potomac School), who cut through traffic and managed to deflect the Knights goalie in the 49th minute.

first year forward Sophie Berman (Robbinsville, NJ/Robbinsville) and Wielechowski teamed up to create the ultimate goal for the junior midfielder Emma Mansfield (Washington, DC / Potomac School). A cross from the back line from the left of the goal and a perfectly placed back heel hit the goalkeeper. The opportunity gave Mansfield an open goal and she converted for the score.

W&L had a 19-6 lead on pitches with a 13-1 on target count. The generals were awarded seven of the eight corners of the games.

junior goalkeeper sydney smith (Damascus, Md. / Damascus) (5-0-2) faced six submissions but only needed to record one save.

The generals travel north on I-81 on Saturday to face Shenandoah at 2pm for their first ODAC game of the season.
