Naomi Osaka withdrew from the WTA Tokyo event earlier today due to an ‘illness’ with tennis fans beating the player on social media.
It’s unclear what kind of illness Osaka had when he decided to retire, but tennis fans quickly came to the conclusion that it likely has something to do with his mental health. Her statement kind of suggests this to be true, as she said her body ‘won’t let her compete’.
Osaka has spoken many times this year about how she is feeling better about her mental health and finally enjoying tennis again, but that hasn’t translated to much success on the court. Now fans are thinking her problems are back and have expressed their displeasure about it:
“ATP just retired this part time shit not helping your mental health,” wrote one fan.
“Is this playing? What kind of game is this?”
Some other reactions include:
“Lately, something always seems to derail her.”
“Holy slap in the face of the fans and the whole tournament.”
“The end of the season for Osaka. A sort of ‘season’ in her terms…”
