PREVIEW: Women’s golf quickly returns to the tee

CHATTANOOGA — The Chattanooga Mocs are back on the road this weekend in Vanderbilt. The women’s golf collective kicked off the week in Knoxville at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate. Now they are on the tee from Friday in the 3-day, 54-hole Mason Rudolph Championship.

Coach Colette MurrayThe company’s travel group consists of six. Southern Conference Golfer of the Week Dorota Zalewska joined the starting lineup for Beatriz Bairros, Kera Healey, Megan Docherty and Carolina Hortian. Neves Martin gets its first rounds with the group playing individually this weekend.

“We love to come to this event”, said the coach Colette Murray declared. “This gives our players the opportunity to see the best teams and individuals in the country/world. They can see how they stack up against the elite of college golf. We like this golf course and look forward to three good numbers as a team.”

Zalewska started very well, averaging 70.17 strokes per round. A more than 2.25 better than his school record of 72.53 last season. Includes five rounds of pair or better with four cards in the 60s. That’s two by Emily McLennan (2013-16) season record set in 2015-16. It also gives Zalewska nine for her career, which is a McLennan record.

Not to be missed is the beginning of Barrios. She’s back after losing last spring and is second on the leaderboard (72.33) with two consistent performances, hitting 216 (E) in New Orleans and 218 (+5) in Knoxville this week. All six of her cards range from 70 to 75 with three pair or best 18 in six rounds.

Healey is impressing as she transitions as a college freshman from South Africa to the US. She had her first under par college card on Monday of this week with a 1 under 70 to open the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate. Docherty posted his best run of the season on Tuesday, finishing with 73, helping the team get to an early low 18 of 286. That’s the same tally as the final round of the 2021 event with a more loaded quintet of veterans.

Hortian is back on the lineup this weekend. Your best score vs. par last season was at Mason Rudolph with 2 under 18 finals (70) and 7 over total (223). Martin is getting his first holes as a Moc. She is on the field as an individual and is playing directly in front of her teammates on Friday. The second year transferred this summer from Oklahoma.

Friday starts at 10:35am on hole 10 with Martin. The 5-person team follows in 10-minute intervals paired with Georgia Southern and LSU. Live scoring is linked above.
