2018: Serena Williams argues with referee Carlos Ramos during her final match against Naomi Osaka at the 2018 US Open.
From photographer Sarah Stier:
“Serena is a very emotional, reactive player who is incredibly passionate about her sport and
being competitive. At this point in 2018, Serena was arguing with the chair umpire during the match about being coached in the stands, which caused a lot of controversy.
“While this was going on, I was just taking pictures trying to document the moment and the unfolding of the story, so it wasn’t clear, like many of the spectators, what was really happening until after the match. This image was a unique capture because few photographers had this vision.
“For me, this photo exemplifies Serena as such a memorable player. She’s not perfect, as none of us are, but she takes great care of the sport and has invested decades of her life into it, which I have so much respect for.”
