NEW ORLEANS – The reigning Southland Conference regular season and postseason champion will make his return to the court this weekend. The New Orleans Privateers men’s tennis team will participate in the Southern Miss Invitational in nearby Hattiesburg, Miss.
The Privateers bring back a slew of returners: six in all from their champion team. They include the top number 1 and number 2 singles players in last year’s lineup in Marcel Volz and Max Heinzel. Volz was Southland’s Player of the Year, while Heinzel won the Southland Tournament MVP.
are also returning Luke Joujan, Espen Lagarde, Matthew Armbruster and Mihajlo Drobnjakovic. Joujan and Lagarde won double-digit matches last season. Armbruster won eight singles matches in his freshman year and Drobnjakovic went 3-2 in singles in 2022. David Tesic also returns but is unavailable to play due to injury.
Two newcomers dot the list. Karim Al-Amin hails from Germany, where he was undefeated in singles over two seasons at Theodor-Heuss-Gymnasium. Al-Amin was part of a team that was in the top ten of the German national championship and runners-up in the conference in 2019.
Lilian Dubois hails from France, where he was ranked in the Top 20 under-18s in his country. Dubois won the TC Vespin Tournament and qualified for an ITF Grade 1 main tournament in France.
This tournament is one of four that Privateers are scheduled to compete in this fall. They will also host Nicholls, travel to ITA Regionals and play the Cajuns Classic in Lafayette in late October.
