Men’s Shoes Go to Roadrunner Invitational for First Fall Competition

SAINT ANTHONY The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Men’s Tennis Team Vaqueros will get their first taste of competition in the fall season Friday through Sunday at the Roadrunner Invitational.

The tournament features some of the top teams in the country including Baylor, Texas Tech, Miami, SMU and other competitive teams the Vaqueros regularly face such as Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Incarnate Word and host UTSA. Draws and tournament schedules will be available at a later date and updated here before the action begins at the UTSA Tennis Center.

“I hope to see a very good focus and good energy. We put in a lot of hard work and I think we will see that happen,” said the coach. Nathan Robinson said. “This tournament is tough. UTSA has put together a great tournament and there will be some good players and a lot of competitive tennis. Our guys are very excited. It will be a good chance for us to get a feel for where we are and set that first standard for ourselves.”

Junior Emilien Burnel is one of four newcomers eager to make his UTRGV debut at the Roadrunner Invitational, along with fellow sophomore transfer Karlo Krolo and junior college sophomore competitors Borna Devald and freshman Agustín Salazar. It’s going to be a little different playing in the Texas heat compared to what Burnel is used to, but he’s up for the challenge and he’s ready to give the Vaqueros a look at what he brings to the team.

“This will be my first time playing in hot weather, so I’ll have to adapt. But we’ve been training hard for a few weeks, so I hope I’m ready for that,” he said. said Burnel. “My serve is one of my best weapons, also my forehand and I like dropshot too. I will try to use these skills in the best way possible. I think the whole team is ready to compete hard and give their best.”

As the fall season kicks off with the Roadrunner Invitational, the Vaqueros will focus on growing and finding their strengths and what areas they will need to work on throughout the season.

“All these new guys, we’re super excited to see what they do. We want to see our returners continue to build on what we built last year,” Robinson said. “Te Kani Williams It’s in the best shape it’s ever been. Chris Lawrence is hitting the ball well and Sam Whitehead It’s in a really good space mentally, so I think it’s going to be a lot of fun to see these guys compete and see where we are and grow from there.”
