NBA Top 100 Players Ranking: Giannis, Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant vie for first place; LeBron James slides

The level of talent in the NBA is at an all-time high, and with that comes its own set of problems in regards to deciphering and determining the best of the best. How to choose the best sentence from a literary masterpiece? Or the most delicious bite at a five-star Michelin restaurant? After a certain point it becomes just a matter of personal preference, and even then the person making the decision may vacillate day by day, hour by hour, minute by minute.

So we come to the inherent torture of ranking the top 100 NBA players.

Stephen Curry, LeBron James, Kevin Durant and Giannis Antetokounmpo couldn’t be more different – from their body type to their skill set and personality. However, must we somehow correctly place them in order of magnitude? Analytics are helpful. Compliments can be tiebreakers. But ultimately, it all comes down to your gut.

That’s why, here at CBS Sports, we take the consensus approach. Each of our NBA writers has created their own list of the Top 100 NBA Players for the 2022-23 season, taking into account potential improvements and declines. So, through a not-so-complex process, we came up with a glorious list to govern them all. (Just to show you how difficult this is, two of our writers didn’t have the top six players in the same order.)

The agony of an exercise like this is entirely the point. We love to say that “so and so is one of the top 10 players in the league”. Oh yeah? Let’s see the list. You’ll be mad for days before you realize the player you wanted to put there isn’t even close.

Debates like this are part of why we love sports. Games are fun and fandom is unlike any other social institution, but questions like this fuel our passion. Who is the best player in the NBA? The topic deserves a long and complex discussion, and we hope we’ve done it justice with our list and analysis.

So here’s the sport we love and the butterflies that can only come with a new season.

With that in mind, let’s get to the list. (For a closer view position by position, CBS Sports also breaks down its rankings to point guards, shooting guards, small attackers, power forward and centers.)
