With no events last year, it’s been two years since a new All-City champion was crowned in women’s golf.
Lakeview is back on top after a relatively long drought for that program as the Spartans took home the All-City championship trophy on Monday.
Lakeview finished in first place with a team score of 173, beating second place Harper Creek in the annual All-City Girls Golf tournament held at the Binder Park Golf Course.
Harper Creek had won the two previously held All-City events in 2019 and 2020, with the 2021 tournament sold out.
“We have five veterans on the team, four of them, this is their fourth year playing and they felt a little cheated because they couldn’t have that last year, it rained,” said Lakeview coach David Ouellette. he said. “So the girls were really looking forward to playing. For the seniors, this is their last All-City and they wanted to walk away with a trophy.”
Lakeview’s Alexa Thurman was the match medalist and finished as All-City champion with a low round of 40. After getting a double bogey on her first hole, she made the second birdie and played well the rest of the way.
“I got off to such a bad start,” Thurman said. “But after that I realized I should go out and have fun and I started to play better.
“I’m excited about the team’s performance. We’re looking forward to the All-City as we didn’t have it last year. We were really excited to try and win it this year.”
After Thurman’s 40, Lakeview’s Annabelle Minneman was close behind with 41 for second and Spartans’ Amiyah Gibson was next with 42. Sydney Ross finished in Lakeview’s top four with a round of 50, already that the entire quartet won every honor in the city.
Jordanne Norris of Harper Creek shared second place with a round of 41 to also be named to the All-City team. Arabella Stanley hit a 52 for the Beavers with Rachel Kyger adding a round of 53 and Mallory Flanders had a 56.
