South Christian hires assistant from Grand Valley State to coach men’s basketball

Taylor Johnson is the new men’s basketball coach at South Christian High School.

Authorities made the announcement on the school’s website on Monday.

Johnson recently trained at Grand Valley State University, serving as an assistant to Ric Wesley for the past six years. Johnson also had a two-month stint as the Lakers’ interim head coach.

“I am very excited and grateful for this new opportunity,” Johnson said in a statement. “This will be a new challenge for my team and I, and we are ready to get started. South Christian has a rich history and tradition. Leaving the college game was a tough decision, but after spending time with (athletic director) Mr. (David) Kool and (director) Mr. (Aaron) Meckes, I realized this is a special place, rich not just in court success, but in your Christ-centered faith.”

Johnson’s resume also includes three years serving as a graduate assistant coach at North Carolina State University, including 2015 when Wolfpack advanced to the Sweet 16. He has helped recruit players such as TJ Warren (Brooklyn Nets) and Dennis Smith Jr. . (Portland Trailblazers). ) for Wolfpack.

Prior to his time at North Carolina State, Johnson was the chief manager of Western Michigan University under Steve Hawkins for three years, where he majored in Business and Communications.

Johnson graduated from Kalamazoo Christian High School in 2009 and was part of the 2008 state championship team.

“I have a lot of respect for high school coaches, especially here in Michigan,” Johnson said. “They’re great colleagues and friends and it’s going to be a lot of fun to be able to compete against them across the state. We have high expectations for our student-athletes here in the South. We will strive for greatness together as a team, but more importantly, we will build relationships together as we are servant leaders in our community as we live for Christ.”

Johnson replaced Jeff Meengs, who stepped down as South Christian’s head coach last August.
