Islander Girls Golf Game Recap: Week of September 12

Senior Natalia Avanni hits a putt on the par-3 ninth hole of the Coronado Golf Course.

Last week, the Coronado Islander women’s golf team had two successful league starts to go 4-4 overall and 3-0 in the Western League, putting them first in an extremely competitive league.

On Wednesday, September 14, the Islanders traveled to the La Jolla Country Club to face the La Jolla Vikings. The course itself was immaculately well maintained with pristine fairways and lightning fast greens. The breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean combine with the undulating slopes of the course for a memorable experience.

As always, the girls proved themselves strong in uncharted territory. None of the islanders had ever set foot in the country club, much less played the field. Junior Inês Izuzquiza was the medalist of the match with an impressive round of a par 36. Junior teammate Bella Villarin followed closely with a score of two over par 37 after a handful of three-strokes. Jasmine Lo carded a 44, and twins Mariella and Natalia Avanni completed the islanders with scores of ten above par 45.

Despite the challenging layout, the course’s rating was only 34.7, meaning a zero golfer would, on average, put 34.7 strokes to the front nine. Racking up a score of 207, the Islanders once again performed solidly on unfamiliar turf. The Vikings lost the match due to more than one player capping their score on double par plus one for at least one of the holes.

The next day, the Islanders were back at the Coronado Golf Course to play league rivals Scripps Ranch. Once a formidable opponent and the Islanders’ biggest competitors, the Falcons only had three players participating, resulting in an automatic forfeit and another victory for the Islanders.

Scores that day were consistent across players. Izuzquiza and Villarin tied for medalist with rounds of three over the par 39 after they both encountered water misfortune on the eighth hole of the par-four. Lo was next with a solid score of six over par 42. Mariella Avanni followed with a 43, tying her personal best for the season so far. Junior Emily Scheurer completed the Islanders with a score of nine over par 45, which she has shot in her last three straight games.

Senior Mariella Avanni starts on the first par-4 hole of the Coronado Golf Course.

The Islanders are currently ranked 6th in San Diego County with a team spread of 24.15 less than four strokes behind Rancho Bernardo. The girls also maintained their position at the top of the Western League leaderboard with a 3-0 record.

Next week, the Islanders will compete against Our Lady of Peace at Riverwalk Golf Club on Tuesday, September 20th. With the advantage of playing at home, the islanders hope to remain at the top of the ranking of the Western League, as these two games will be crucial for their record. Both Cathedral and OLP are just behind Coronado with an impeccable 2-0 league record.
