MADISON, Wisconsin — For the first time since the introduction of the Big Ten Championship Game in 2011, Wisconsin has gone through two consecutive seasons without making it to Indianapolis.
That doesn’t sit well with the Badgers heading into 2022.
“In Wisconsin, we are expected to win every game. We are expected to win the Big Ten,” said junior outside linebacker. Nick Herbigwho had 9.0 sacks last season.
UW sat in the driver’s seat en route to the regular season finale in Minnesota. However, the Gophers surprised the Badgers 23-13 in Minneapolis on a chilly November night, which ended with the UM faithful rushing onto the field and mocking their border rival by playing ‘Jump Around’ during the post-game hoopla.
While the media picked UW to win the West and return to Indianapolis for the first time since 2019, that’s not good enough for the Badgers.
Once again, Ohio State, also looking to avenge a hiccup in their regular season finale loss to rival Michigan, are the overwhelming favorite to hoist the Big Ten title trophy in December.
Meanwhile, UW got its third best shot at winning the league, behind the Buckeyes and Wolverines, something the program hasn’t done since 2012.
“Personally and as a team, this is a place where you always have a chip on your shoulder,” junior quarterback Graham Mertz said. “Whether it’s noise from outside and people saying you can’t do something, that’s what you get when you come here.
“That’s what we love. That’s what we thrive on.”
