Terrier Twelve – #2: Women’s Rowing Triumphs at Patriot League Championships

#2 in the Terrier Twelve this year is the women’s rowing team, which claimed its first automatic NCAA berth in eight years after all three boats reached the podium at the Patriot League Championship.

Sent by sophomore Trisha Jaggi and stroked by junior Tiare Hicks, the second varsity 8 boat beat the Navy by nearly three seconds to earn its first-ever gold medal. Both the varsity eight and varsity four boats claimed silver in their respective races to help the Terriers finish at the top of the standings 50 points ahead of six-time defending champions Midshipmen (46 points) and Bucknell (48 points).

BU carried the momentum to the NCAA Championships, where it placed 19th overall, finishing ahead of three conference champions – Northeastern (CAA), Rhode Island (Atlantic 10), and Jacksonville (MAAC). The second varsity 8 boat reached its first C final since 2013, and the varsity 8 boat finished the competition by winning the D final by seven seconds.

The Terriers started the 2021-22 season at a high level with six boats achieving top-10 finishes among collegiate crews at the Head of the Charles Regatta, with the four-boat championship finishing second and fourth overall in their respective race. In the spring, they opened with a win over fellow PL rival MIT and added varsity eight boat wins against Boston College, Eastern Michigan, Northeastern and Rhode Island. In another notable performance, the BU went south to the Lake Wheeler Invitational in North Carolina, finishing seventh out of 16 crews, leading them to notable programs including UCF, Oklahoma, Kansas and North Carolina.

At the end of the year, senior Mia Balljunior Kat Robbinssophomore Bianca Saffirio and senior Lexi Wright earned All-Patriot League honors with director of women’s rowing Madeline Davis Tully Claiming PL Coach of the Year awards. Senior Megan Mastrorillic also received All-America Honorable Mention recognition for her efforts.

BU excelled not only on the water, but also in the classroom with a 3.31 GPA for the spring semester. Eight Terriers were recognized with the CRCA Scholar-Athlete Award for maintaining cumulative GPAs above 3.50 while rowing in a minimum of 75% of the team’s races. Mastrorilli, senior Josephine Olson and senior Kylie Graves added the prestigious Scarlet Key Award, one of the BU’s highest academic awards that recognizes the curricular and extracurricular achievements of the nominated students.
